Marketing and Advertising  

The Commission on Marketing and Advertising promotes high ethical standards in marketing by effective business self-regulation through ICC international marketing codes,
and elaborates world business views on government initiatives affecting marketing and consumer protection.

The ICC International Code of Advertising Practice was first published in 1937. Over half a century and seven editions later, it is still one of the most successful codes for voluntary business self-regulation in marketing, and is widely used throughout the world. Other ICC codes currently in force cover on-line advertising and marketing, sales promotion, direct marketing, sponsorship, environmental advertising, as well as marketing and social research.

Projects for 2006

  • Adopt and promote the revised ICC International Code of Advertising Practice.
  • Streamline the entire collection of ICC codes on advertising and marketing by developing a global ICC code framework using the newly-revised Code of Advertising Practice as an umbrella.
  • Develop and ICC “roadmap for self-regulation” to highlight the benefits of selfregulation and to identify appropriate roles for business, governments and stakeholders in tackling emerging issues.
  • Feed business views into the work of ISO on projects related to consumer issues in marketing and advertising and to self-regulatory codes.
